All-Female Group Will Run New NFL ‘Social Responsibility’ Team

The NFL has come under intense fire in the last week, with some even raising the question of how much the league really cares about women. Well, today the NFL announced the formation of an all-female “social responsibility” team to look into issues like domestic violence.

The team will consist of four women: Anna Isaacson, the NFL vice president of community relations and philanthropy (who will now also be the vice president of social responsibility); Lisa Friel, who used to run sex crimes prosecution in the New York City DA’s office; Jane Randel, the co-founder of a group established to take action against domestic violence and sexual assault; and Rita Smith, who used to be the executive director at the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell put out a statement saying this initative will “help lead and shape the NFL’s policies and programs relating to domestic violence and sexual assault.”

NOW President Terry O’Neill called this a “step in the right direction,” but also said it isn’t enough. And NOW’s website is still pushing a campaign to get Goodell to resign.
