Anti-Gay Pastor Responds to ‘Liar’ John Oliver: Let’s Debate
John Oliver did a big segment on his show this week about LGBT discrimination in Uganda and took on Scott Lively, a U.S. pastor connected to Uganda’s anti-gay laws. Lively responded this week, calling Oliver a “loony” and challenging him to a one-on-one debate.
On his show Last Week Tonight, Oliver mocked Lively, said he’s “clearly an idiot,” and showed how he ended up influencing Uganda’s laws against homosexuals (he even addressed the country’s parliament for five hours). He showed videos of Lively saying things like homosexuality and pedophilia are basically the same thing and comparing gays to Nazis.
In response, Lively called Oliver a “liar and a fraud who couldn’t go ten minutes with me in an unscripted, unedited debate.” He charged that “without his teleprompter and his cheap-shot, out-of-context video clips he would be exposed as just another left-wing loony.”
Not once did Lively actually refute any specific comments Oliver made, but he did say Oliver engaged in “selective editing,” went on a bit of a tangent about Saul Alinsky tactics, and said he’s simply a victim of “the powers-that-be in the progressive/LGBT community as their current target.”
