AOL Tech Blog Engadget Turns Off Comments After Rush Of iPad Trolls

Aol.’s technology and consumer electronics blog Engadget has closed their comments sections after a huge burst of “trollish” feedback spurred by increased traffic due to iPad coverage. “Hey guys, we know you like to have your fun, voice your opinions, and argue over your favorite gear, but over the past few days the tone in comments has really gotten out of hand,” wrote editor-in-chief Joshua Topolsky in a post this morning. It’s like putting the internet in time out!

In the tone of a stern father, Topolsky continued, “Some of you out there in the world of anonymous grandstanding have gotten the impression that you run the place, but that’s simply not the case.” Without a clear duration for the commenter exile, he merely said, “we’ll switch them back on when we feel like we’ve shaken some of the trolls and spammers loose from the branches.” I’m turning this car around and we’re not getting ice cream!

In all seriousness, it’s a major decision for a blog to completely close its internal communication channel and the lock down probably won’t last long. In an interview with Venture Beat, Topolsky expanded on this morning’s announcement, citing arguments like “‘VAIOs suck, Macs rule,’ or ‘Macs are gay.’” Tech blogs: the internet’s playground, or the backseat of an SUV before soccer practice.
