Surveillance Footage From Parkland High School Shows Police Standing Outside During Shooting
Due to “strong public interest,” a judge ordered the release of the surveillance video from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during last month’s shooting which left 17 people dead and 15 others wounded.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office released the video Thursday, which shows exactly how the Sheriff’s Office responded to the shooting. At 2:21 PM, when shots were fired inside the school, School Resource Deputy Scot Peterson, who has since resigned from his post, arrived on the scene within minutes but stood outside the building rather than entering and trying to apprehend the shooter.
The clips only show the police response outside, not the horror that occurred within. The shooter, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, massacred students and teachers for six minutes, and it took 11 minutes for officers to enter the school from the time the shooting was reported.
The video’s release was brought about by a lawsuit from media outlets arguing that the public ought to “be given the first-hand opportunity to review and evaluate the video and the actions of its government officials.”
Still, the footage provided only shows a small amount of the response and focuses mostly on Peterson. It is not clear whether more footage with different viewpoints exists.
