AZ Senator Flake on Troops Sent to Border: ‘Can’t Call It Anything But a Stunt’
Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) were together again Wednesday — and this time, they were jointly fired up about the idea of troops on the border ahead of the migrant caravan
In an a Morning Joe segment evocative of their joint appearances during the final days of Justice Brett Kavanaugh‘s confirmation process, Flake and Coons ripped President Donald Trump for deploying troops to Tuscon, AZ — 90 miles from the border. Mika Brzezinski asked the senators what they would tell a soldier about the deployment face-to-face.
“I think you can’t call it anything but a stunt here,” Flake said. “And it’s unfortunate that they’re going to be away from family during the holidays coming up and we just don’t know what really for. We don’t know where the caravan — if it makes it north — is going to come. I think it could be handled by civilians that we have there, in terms of border patrol, and others. So I don’t know what I could tell them other than we shouldn’t be doing this.”
Coons added, “I’d have to look them in the eye and say, ‘Thank you for your service, and I regret that our president is using you as a political stunt.'”
