Backlash Over Boston Marathon Bombing ‘Memorabilia’ For Sale On eBay

In the days since the Boston Marathon bombings, items from the race such as jackets and pins have been appearing for sale on eBay, drawing accusations that people are attempting to profit from the horrific event. While some items, like this official finisher’s medal, are being auctioned for charity to benefit the newly established One Fund Boston for victims. But others appear to be on sale purely for the seller’s profit, a fact that has many people outraged.

As ABC News reports, a video that purportedly shows “looters stealing marathon jackets” received a large amount of attention from the Reddit community after it was posted there on Tuesday. It is not clear whether any of the people shown in the video were in fact taking items with the intention of reselling them on eBay.

A spokesperson for eBay sent the following statement to ABC, explaining their policy on sensitive matters like this one:

“We are deeply saddened by the Boston tragedy and our thoughts and prayers go out to those affected. Out of respect for victims, eBay does not allow listings that graphically portray, glorify or attempt to profit from human tragedy or suffering. eBay’s teams are monitoring related listings to ensure they comply with our policies and also taking into account reports from our community members. When a listing is brought to our attention that may go against our guidelines, we carefully consider the context and all of the details, and decisions to remove items are made on a case-by-case basis. Anyone can report an item to eBay for review by clicking the ‘Report Item’ link on the listing.”

One of the medal sellers who does not plan to donate the proceeds to charity, clearly acknowledges the ethical dilemma on the post. “Just want to add that I am only selling my medal to recoup some cost I incurred from the tragic events that happened,” writes eBay user sbrendurance. “Hotels are not cheap and I am not rich. Sorry if the auction offends anyone, that is not the intent.” The current bid has just reached $176.50.
