Baltimore Burns Huckabee over Confederate Flag
Mike Huckabee had some words for the city of Baltimore’s handling of the Freddie Gray protests two months ago, and the city of Baltimore had some words right back.
Speaking at the National Sheriffs’ Association Monday, Huckabee criticized Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake and other city officials for turning against police officers in the wake of Gray’s death while in police custody.
“When the Baltimore mob rioted … it was not the police that we needed to worry about, it was the lack of unified support at the highest levels of leadership for those who went out there and held the thin blue line against anarchy,” Huckabee said.
On Tuesday the city snapped back.
“Any person who can’t give a straight answer on whether or not the Confederate flag should fly is the last person we should take advice from on bringing people together,” a city spokesperson said, per the Baltimore Sun. A former southern governor, Huckabee tap-danced around the Confederate flag issue this weekend.
“In Baltimore we love and support our police, but that love and support doesn’t mean we turn a blind eye when obvious reforms are needed,” the spox continued. “We are up to the challenge and will continue to move our Police Department forward while improving the relationship between police and community.”
