Biden: 5-6 Million Obamacare Enrollees a ‘Hell of a Start’
Vice President Joe Biden acknowledged Wednesday night that the Affordable Care Act was likely to fall short of its projected goal of 7 million enrollees, but that the program would likely reach 5-6 million by the March 31st deadline.
“We may not get to 7 million, but if we get to 5 or 6 million that’s a hell of a start,” Biden said.
During an unannounced stop at a coffeeshop in Minneapolis, Biden attributed the lowered enrollment numbers to the dysfunctional rollout. “We didn’t want this to start off as shaky as it did,” he said. “But it’s complicated.”
Enrollment is currently at about 3.3 million, of about three-quarters of the projected number; the pace of enrollments increased drastically after the malfunctioning federal exchange website kept enrollment virtually nil through October and November.
