Bill Simmons Comically Censors His Own Ray Rice Comments to Appease ESPN

Bill Simmons had some fun at his ESPN bosses’ expense during his podcast Monday, censoring himself with musk instead of sharing his actual opinions about Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice, who was reinstated after indefinite suspension from the NFL last week. With the bit, Simmons was subtly commenting on his own suspension from ESPN following his remarks about NFL commissioner Roger Goodell back in September.
Simmons was talking to “Cousin” Sal Iacono about this past week’s games when he casually brought up Rice, saying, “it turns out an independent judge —” At that point, the music kicked in and kept returning as the two supposedly discussed the off-limits situation.
On his last podcast before the three-week suspension, Simmons called Goodell a “liar” for saying he had not seen that surveillance tape of Rice knocking out his wife in an elevator. “For all these people to pretend they didn’t know is such fucking bullshit,” he said. The network said those remarks did not meet ESPN’s “journalistic standards” and therefore instituted the suspension.
