Twitter Announces It’s Suspended Over 125,000 Accounts for Promoting Terrorism

twitterTwitter announced in a blog post today that it has been cracking down a lot more on accounts that promote terrorism and has, since mid-2015, suspended over 125,000 accounts “for threatening or promoting terrorist acts, primarily related to ISIS.”

In the blog post, Twitter says they’re cooperating more with law enforcement and working with more groups to combat the kind of “extremist content” that occasionally pops up online.

This is the main takeaway here:

As many experts and other companies have noted, there is no “magic algorithm” for identifying terrorist content on the internet, so global online platforms are forced to make challenging judgement calls based on very limited information and guidance. In spite of these challenges, we will continue to aggressively enforce our Rules in this area, and engage with authorities and other relevant organizations to find solutions to this critical issue and promote powerful counter-speech narratives.

People have been calling on Twitter to crack down on terror-connected accounts for a while now.
