Brian Williams Told Iraqi Helicopter Story on Letterman in 2013
Brian Williams today admitted a story he’s told several times about being in a helicopter that was shot down in Iraq in 2003 was not accurate. He offered a sincere apology for recounting this inaccurate version of events on multiple occasions, like back in 2013, when he told the tale on The Late Show.
Williams had joked to David Letterman in a self-deprecating way about not being a “terribly good” war correspondent before diving into the story. He specifically said the helicopter he was in got hit, he had a pretty serious “holy crap” moment, and they had to make an emergency landing.
Crew members of the 159th Aviation Regiment said Williams had “arrived in the area about an hour later on another helicopter after the other three had made an emergency landing.”
Williams had also described himself as an “accidental tourist covering a conflict trying to get close to these fantastic volunteers we have in the war who raised their hands to go fight two wars.”
