Business Insider Was Hacked Because of One Simple Mistake You Might Be Making
Earlier today, the following message appeared on a number of Business Insider articles:
Hey, don’t worry we are just testing your security, we didn’t change your password or anything.
The bright red lettering was concerning to the publication, as was the fact that users of their mobile app received a push notification alerting them to the changed articles. Hey, it could have been worse.
In a statement released today, they admitted what happened — which is already better than some companies in similar situations have done — and explained what happened by revealing that at least one BI employee with publishing access may have been using the same password across multiple sites.
Don’t do that!
If your password for, say, your Yahoo account is obtained in a large-scale hack, you’d better hope it’s not the same password you use to get into your company’s accounts when you’re at work.
In the past, Mediaite has even underscored the importance of bloggers and journalists changing their passwords all the time. No matter what you do, though, password switching is just a good habit to get into.
