Cesar Chavez’s Grandson Sues Candidate Who Changed Name to Cesar Chavez
A white Republican candidate running for office in Arizona changed his name to Cesar Chavez to, presumably, appeal to Hispanic voters. Well, the grandson of Cesar Chavez (you know, the famous labor leader) has filed suit against Chavez (or rather, Scott Fistler).
Alejandro Chavez believes that the name change is an overt, obvious attempt to capitalize on his grandfather’s name. His campaign lawyer explained, “What drew the attention of Alejandro was Scott Fistler sort of cynically changing his name to Cesar Chavez. We wanted to basically call out what we saw as an effort to confuse the voters.”
Chavez is challenging the signatures Fistler collected in order to run for office and believes he can get Fistler/Chavez thrown off the ballot.
In addition, the lawsuit contends that Fistler knowingly “sought to confuse voters with his name change.” Well, not if everyone reads the news about the name change, he won’t.
