Clinton Jokes About ‘No More Secrecy’ with the Press: ‘What Good Did It Do Me?’
MC-ing a journalism awards ceremony Monday night, press-avoider Hillary Clinton got several zingers off on her strained relationship with the political press corps.
“My relationship with the press has been at times, shall we say, complicated,” Clinton said, per Reuters’ Amanda Becker. “So I thought to myself what could possibly go wrong” about appearing before a room full of them?
Clinton was speaking at the ceremony for the Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting, an engagement which became awkward three weeks ago when she appeared to be pointedly avoiding the press in the wake of reports of her private email server. It was revealed that Clinton would not take questions at the event, which clashed oddly with the theme of the award.
But in her remarks, Clinton jokingly hinted at a new start with the press. “I am all about new beginnings,” she said. “A new grandchild. A new hairstyle. A new email account. A new relationship with the press.”
“No more secrecy, no more zone of privacy,” Clinton added, before joking that non-disclosure agreements were beneath everyone’s chairs. “After all what good did that do me.” Haha!
