Clooney Won’t Accept Daily Mail’s Apology for Printing False Story

George Clooney rejected an apology from the UK publication The Daily Mail, after he slammed them for publishing a “premeditated lie” claiming his fiancée’s mother disapproved of their upcoming marriage for religious reasons.

Earlier this week, the Mail — which has a reputation for printing things that are wrong — published a story saying that the mother of Amal Alamuddin was “telling half of Beirut” that she didn’t like her daughter marrying outside of the Druze religion, and according to anonymous sources claiming they were familiy friends, joked about killing her. Problem is, neither Alamuddin or her mother are Druze — and the Mail had published an article back in April confirming that fact. (Oops.)

The Mail published an apology on Wednesday, pulled the article offline, and vowed to investigate the story. In a statement, Clooney told USAToday that he wouldn’t accept it:

What separates this from all of the ridiculous things the Mail makes up is that now, by their own admission, it can be proved to be a lie. In fact, a premeditated lie.

So I thank the Mail for its apology. Not that I would ever accept it, but because in doing so they’ve exposed themselves as the worst kind of tabloid.

One that makes up its facts to the detriment of its readers and to all the publications that blindly reprint them.
