CNN’s Stelter to Seth Meyers: Is There a ‘Civil War’ Over Trump Coverage Between You and Fallon?

meyersAmidst the fallout from Jimmy Fallon‘s recent interview with Republican candidate Donald Trump, CNN’s Brian Stelter sat with Seth Meyers to get his perspective on how late-night comics ought to approach the mogul.

Meyers and Fallon have back-to-back shows on NBC, but the two funnymen tend to use vastly different styles whenever they broach political subjects. Fallon’s easygoing, lighthearted approach was on full display when he had Trump on The Tonight Show, whereas Meyers is known to use Late Night to offer takedowns on the mogul’s behavior and various controversies.

Stelter began by asking if there was a “civil war” between Meyers and Fallon over how to tackle Trump. Meyers said there was no such dispute, and he acknowledged that he and Fallon use different styles to reach out to their respective audiences.

“When you look at the 11:30 shows, they’re different kinds of TV shows,” Meyers said. “Some people want to turn on TV… and they want to see hard takes on politics and they want to be reminded of everything that’s going on in the world. Other people use it for escapism.”

Fallon received a lot of criticism from those who accused him of humanizing Trump, but he retorted that he never makes a habit of getting tough on his guests. Meyers, for his part, humorously “banned” Trump from his show in retaliation for the mogul’s previous blacklisting of the media.
