Colbert Heartwarmingly Recalls Meeting Justice Antonin Scalia: ‘I Will Forever Be Grateful’
“Don’t you make me love you old man!” was how Late Show host Stephen Colbert concluded a story he told about the night he met Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, ten years ago during the White House Correspondents Dinner. Scalia passed away Saturday night at a ranch in Texas, and Colbert devoted a quick segment of his show Monday night to the humor and warmth the late judiciary giant showed the comedian a decade ago.
Funny enough, the night in question was arguably when Stephen Colbert made a name for himself as heir apparent to Jon Stewart. Colbert, in character, skewered the Bush administration ruthlessly tongue-in-cheek seated just feet away, and while many of those in attendance were not appreciative of the comedian’s jokes, Justice Scalia seemed to love every minute.
“No one was even making eye contact with me,” Colbert revealed about the awkwardness at the end of his speech. Although, a specific bit aimed at teasing Scalia landed well with the Supreme Court Justice, and it resulted in an unexpectedly supportive conversation.
“I will forever be grateful for that moment of human contact that he gave me,” said the comedian.
