Colbert Knows That the Newest Scandal to Plague Hillary Clinton Has Nothing to Do With Politics
Tonight in Cleveland, the sports world will watch as history gets made when the Indians take on the Chicago Cubs in Game 1 of the World Series. It’s been a matchup decades in the making, or about as long as the 2016 race has felt.
It’s the showdown between two lovable losers: the Cleveland Indians last won a World Series title in 1948, while the Cubs’ streak goes back all the way to 1908. It’s the stuff of dreams for sports fans; it’s also the stuff of controversy for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
While people have long surmised that an October Surprise might strike her candidacy in the form of a new WikiLeaks dump, the Cubbies returning to the World Series is creating new waves for the former Secretary of State: is she really a fan?
Clinton is a Chicago native, and while reports indicated that she grew up a diehard Cubs fan, she quite publicly altered her allegiance years later in favor of the New York Yankees during her state senate run. Stephen Colbert opened his monologue Monday night saying, “It’s a baseball fandom scandal I’m calling Yankghazi.”
A photo emerged from the campaign trail this weekend of Clinton enthusiastically reacting to Chicago clinching the NL pennant, prompting many to wonder where her allegiance falls. Will she address it head-on in the coming week? It’s a topic that she balk on altogether, especially considering the razor-thin margin that separates herself from Donald Trump in the Indians’ home state of Ohio.
