Dan Rather Blasts Kellyanne Conway, Says ‘Alternate Facts’ is a ‘Propaganda Tool’
Dan Rather has been a vocal critic of the media and the Trump administration of late. Now, the former CBS Evening News anchor is turning his attention to Kellyanne Conway, accusing her of employing a “propaganda tool.”
Speaking on his show Dan Rather’s America on the SiriusXM’s Radio Andy Channel, Rather used strong language to condemn the now infamous “alternate facts” term Conway used during an appearance on Meet The Press this past week.
“(T)his idea of “alternate facts” is a propaganda tool. Yes, I used the word “propaganda” – a propaganda tool in order to confuse people. Personally, I think this is very dangerous.”
Rather said. that he believed press secretary Sean Spicer was “sent out to lie” when he addressed the White House press corps on Saturday with debunked statistics about the size of the Inauguration crowd.
At the worst of the Nixon time, when he was cornered with the widespread criminal conspiracy that we call for shorthand “Watergate,” even at the very worst of it, you didn’t have a circumstance where his press secretary was sent out to lie, and to know that he was lying. Don’t misunderstand me, Nixon had no aversion to sending his press secretary out to tell falsehoods. But to send him out to tell a falsehood he knew was a lie – he didn’t go that far.
Rather added:
“Here’s the central point folks. When the spokesman for the president, and when the president himself, but the spokesman most recently, talks about alternate facts – alternate facts – whether you like President Trump or don’t like him or haven’t made up your mind about him, this, folks is ridiculous.”
