Danny DeVito on #OscarsSoWhite: ‘The Entire Country Is a Racist Country’
Danny DeVito gave a pretty blunt take on the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, saying at Sundance yesterday, “The entire country is a racist country.”
DeVito lamented how “even though some people have given great performances in movies,” they were overlooked, possibly on the basis of race.
“We are living in a country,” he said, “that discriminates and has certain… racist tendencies. So sometimes it manifests in things like this and it’s illuminated. But just generally speaking, we’re a bunch of racists.”
DeVito was at Sundance for his new film Wiener-Dog. One of his co-stars, Julie Delpy, got lots of attention on Friday for saying Hollywood is worse for women than for African-Americans.
You can watch DeVito’s remarks, followed by comments from Don Cheadle and Sam Neill, via the Associated Press.
