Dem Candidate Jim Webb: Iran Deal Looks Like We’re Accepting They’ll Get a Nuke

Democratic presidential candidate Jim Webb came out against the Iran deal Wednesday, saying that it sent a signal to the Middle East the U.S. was accepting the “eventuality” of Iranian nuclear weapons.

After the deal was announced Tuesday, Webb’s reaction was noncommittal. “This is an important moment in terms of the future of American foreign policy. I look forward to reading and examining the agreement,” he said.

But by the next day, he was more critical. “My concern really is that at the bottom line of the agreement, here is what we have; we have Iran having their sanction lifted, having a number of these other issues with respect to their activities not addressed, and having the rest of the region receiving a signal, that we the United States are accepting the eventuality that they will acquire a nuclear weapon,” Webb told NPR’s Diane Rehm.

“However through the checks and the measures as the agreement moves forward, it looks like that’s where we end up after ten years,” he added.
