Egypt Reportedly Brokers 3-Day Ceasefire Between Israel and Hamas
CNN is reporting that Israel and Hamas have accepted a three-day ceasefire brokered by the Egyptian government, for humanitarian purposes — though both sides are wary that it may not last.
“We are entering this with our eyes open,” Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev told Jake Tapper today. “We have been burnt more than once.”
The ceasefire comes a little more than four weeks after Israel launched Operation Protective Edge against the Gaza strip, and after multiple failed negotiations for a ceasefire. The current agreement was proposed by the Egyptian government three weeks ago and accepted by Israel, but rejected by Palestine.
While Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed today that the conflict would not end until all the tunnels being built into Israel had been destroyed, an IDF spokesman confirmed that there were “between one and three” tunnels left.
According to figures given by the Palestinian Health Ministry, the conflict has killed 1,856 people in Gaza, and 64 Israeli militia.
