EPA Official Disses Gifts She Received from Alaska; State Lawmakers Not Happy

Say what you will about EPA administrator Gina McCarthy, she can be pretty blunt. Case in point, in a recent Wall Street Journal profile, McCarthy talks about gifts she received when she was in Alaska… in a less than flattering manner. In a passing mention of strict gift guidelines, McCarthy said officials confronted her about receiving two gifts: a North Pole pin and a jar of moose meat a little Alaskan girl gave her.

The pin was no longer a factor, because, McCarthy explained, “I threw the f–––ing thing away.” And as for the moose meat, McCarthy said it “could gag a maggot” with its smell.

Naturally, Alaskan lawmakers were none too happy about what McCarthy had to say. Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski called it an “unforgivable statement,” while Congressman Don Young said the remark sounded like McCarthy “has contempt for” the Alaskan people and culture.

So McCarthy’s office issued an apology, of course, and made it clear she “meant no disrespect” in her remarks about the moose meat.
