Etsy Will No Longer Sell Magical Spells and/or Hexes

If you were hoping to buy your next tailor-made love spell on Etsy, you’re going to find yourself out of luck. The e-commerce site recently rolled out some new rules concerning what they sell and effective immediately, magic spells and hexes will no longer be available. Wiccans are claiming its an infringement of their religious rights, but it’s not necessarily a ban on magic, it’s just a ban on “any metaphysical service that promises or suggests it will effect a physical change (e.g., weight loss) or other outcome (e.g., love, revenge) is not allowed, even if it delivers a tangible item.”

For obvious reasons, some people who might buy such a product may feel like they’re throwing their money into the sky and not getting anything in return if their “spell” doesn’t come to pass. But also, magic isn’t real, so there’s that too.

It’s not a cut-and-dry ban on magical items, however, because services such as tarot readings, astrological chart readings, and candles are still allowed to be sold as long as they make no promises of a change in the buyer or someone else or a cure for a disease or condition. So basically, these things can be sold as long as there is no magic being sold with them. Or at least no one believes the magic being associated with them.

So if I wanted to sell a love candle on Etsy as a shop owner of magical items, I would have to brand my love candle as a mood-setting candle that contains oils that some say smell nice but have nothing to do with inviting attraction of a lover. Defeating the purpose of my candle, but still selling my candle.

So sorry, my witches — you’ll have to sell your wares elsewhere.
