Ex-FIFA Official Charged with Corruption Attacks the U.S. by Citing… The Onion

fifa warnerAn ex-FIFA official charged with corruption this week released a bizarre, rambling video attacking the U.S. over an article he read in The Onion.

No, seriously.

Former FIFA executive Jack Warner was one of many FIFA officials accused of corruption by the U.S. Department of Justice. Warner insisted in his video that he did nothing wrong and thanked everyone who’s been supporting him in the last few days.

At one point in the video, Warner brings up an article about how FIFA gave the U.S. the World Cup the day of the indictments. And he lashed out at the U.S. over this, questioning America’s possible motives in this.

There’s just one problem: he was citing an article from The Onion titled “FIFA Frantically Announces 2015 Summer World Cup In United States.” Here’s part of what it says, to give you some idea of how obvious it should have been this was satire:

At press time, the U.S. national team was leading defending champions Germany in the World Cup’s opening match after being awarded 12 penalties in the game’s first three minutes.
