Families Affected by 9/11 Protest Trump’s Travel Ban: ‘Not in Our Name’
When Donald Trump enacted an executive order to ban travel from seven Muslim majority countries last month, he cited 9/11 as one of the events that inspired the ban. Yesterday, at a rally in Manhattan’s Battery Park, families who lost loved ones on 9/11 fought back.
In front of Fritz Koenig‘s Sphere, an iconic piece of art pulled from the wreckage of the Twin Towers, they chanted “Not in our name!” according to, DNAinfo, a source that’s more or less omniscient when it comes to the goings-on in NYC. Terri McGovern, who lost mother Ann McGovern on 9/11, said this:
Stop using our loved ones to justify the same type of hatred that killed them. This ban is blanket discrimination, and has nothing to do with what America stands for … Donald Trump is making America less safe. I know my mother would want me here, she would have hated Donald Trump.
Talat Hamdani, whose son, Mohammad Salman Hamdani, was an NYPD officer among the first responders on 9/11, asked, “How can Trump say he is protecting us? Why not go after Saudi Arabia then? My son died trying to help, to protect — don’t use his life, or lives of any of the victims to justify this ban.”
DNAinfo reported that the event was largely peaceful, the exception being a man carrying a bumper sticker supporting the candidacy of Trump and VP Mike Pence. He kept yelling, “Go to hell, scum!” and “You lost!” at the families.
