Good Grief! Animated Colbert Dismayed by Who Santa Voted For: ‘He Said He’d Bring Coal Jobs Back…’

The cold open for Tuesday night’s episode of The Late Show featured an animated version of the show host in the spirit of Charlie Brown Christmas. “Good grief,” the animated Stephen Colbert says like the animated classic. “Christmas is coming and Donald Trump‘s going to be President.”

A small glimmer of hope emerges however in the form of Santa Clause, who Colbert is stunned to learn is an American. “Unlike that Easter Bunny,” says Santa in the bit, “he lives on that island with all those huge stone heads.”

“So, does that mean you voted in the election?” asks Colbert. “Santa… please tell me you didn’t vote for Trump.”

St. Nick’s heavy sigh of regret says it all.

“It was the only thing Donald wanted for Christmas!” he replies. “My hands were tied!” And as is often the case, even Santa Clause gave a rationale for his vote that was based in manufacturing jobs.

“He said he’d bring coal jobs back…” Santa sheepishly admitted in the bit. Hey, at least he admitted Trump’s on the naughty list.
