In an interview with The New York Times, Ohio’s Republican Governor John Kasich suggested that Republicans in Washington have been combatant in their handling of poverty-related issues.
“I’m concerned about the fact there seems to be a war on the poor,” Kasich said in a story published Tuesday. “That if you’re poor, somehow you’re shiftless and lazy.”
“You know what?” he added. “The very people who complain ought to ask their grandparents if they worked at the W.P.A.”
In 2010, former Fox News host Kasich unseated incumbent Democratic Gov. Ted Strickland largely riding the wave of tea party support. His support from the conservative movement has dwindled since then, however, as a result of his efforts to bypass his own state’s legislature in expanding Ohio’s Medicaid coverage under Obamacare.
