GOP Senator Reacts To Liz Cheney Challenge: ‘I Thought We Were Friends’

Liz Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, is getting into the Wyoming Senate race next year, challenging Republican incumbent Mike Enzi in the primary. Ever since rumblings began of a Cheney run, the reactions were mixed, from encouragement to predictions of “the destruction of the Republican Party of Wyoming.” Cheney confirmed her candidacy in a YouTube video posted Tuesday afternoon, and her official announcement is scheduled for Wednesday.

In 2012, Cheney referred to Enzi as “a terrific senator and an old friend,” and Cheney reportedly let Enzi know ahead of time she was considering the run. But Enzi had some interesting words for Cheney when he reacted to the news today.

“She said that if I ran she wasn’t going to run, but obviously that wasn’t correct. I thought we were friends.”

But as Harry Truman once reportedly said, “If you want a friend in Washington, get a dog.”

Last month, Wyoming’s at-large representative Cynthia Lummis said she would back Enzi if he ran again, and the National Republican Senatorial Committee affirmed today their support will be behind Enzi.
