‘I’m Old Enough to Remember When Republicans Loved the CBO’: Dana Bash on Spicer’s CBO Criticism

Following today’s White House press briefing, a CNN panel discussion touched on White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer essentially questioning the legitimacy of the Congressional Budget Office prior to it providing a score for the GOP’s new healthcare plan.

With political analyst Gloria Borger noting that this felt like a prebuttal from Spicer and a way to attack the CBO’s credibility, host Dana Bash played a clip of Spicer delivering his criticisms of the nonpartisan organization, including Spicer saying don’t look to the CBO if you’re looking for accuracy.

Following that, Bash made the following observation while bringing political director David Chalian into the conversation.

“If I were at the CBO I would be in bed with the cover over my head because of the way he just completely took that organization down,” Bash said. “I’m old enough to remember when Republicans loved the CBO because it tells the conservatives the thing that matters most to them which is how much is it going to cost taxpayers.”

Chalian would respond that this is the second day in a row that Spicer has used the press briefing to “de-emphasize” what the CBO score of the healthcare plan will be.
