Iowa Libertarian Candidate Dies in Plane Crash

Dr. Doug Butzier, the libertarian candidate for U.S. Senator from Iowa, died in a plane crash Monday.

Butzier was flying a single-engine plane from Ankeny, Iowa to Dubuque Regional Airport by himself Monday. The plane crashed about a mile north of the Dubuque airport after missing a runway approach.

Butzier, an emergency medical physician at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, was polling with around 2% in the hotly contested Senate race between Bruce Braley and Joni Ernst.
