Jan Brewer Signs Ban On Planned Parenthood Funding In Arizona

On Friday, Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed into law The Whole Woman’s Health Funding Priority Act, which bans Planned Parenthood and similar groups that offer abortions to women from receiving state funding. “This is a common-sense law that tightens existing state regulations and closes loopholes in order to ensure that taxpayer dollars are not used to fund abortions, whether directly or indirectly,” Brewer said. “By signing this measure into law, I stand with the majority of Americans who oppose the use of taxpayer funds for abortion.”

According to New York Magazine reporter Brett Smiley, “Per the Priority Act, it doesn’t matter what other services a clinic provides. So long as abortion is one of them, the state and every local government is banned from using public money to contract with the organization.”

ThinkProgress’s Scott Keyes observes that the move will have a significant impact on lower-income Arizona women who “rely on places like Planned Parenthood for many of their health care needs, only 3 percent of which are abortions. He notes that the vast majority of Planned Parenthood’s operations are non-abortion related patient care, including “mammograms, STI treatment, and other health services.”
