Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC), a ideological leader of the conservative movement in the upper chamber of Congress, announced on Thursday that he will vacate his seat in January to head the conservative think tank, Heritage Foundation.
“I’ve decided to join The Heritage Foundation at a time when the conservative movement needs strong leadership in the battle of ideas,” said DeMint in a statement announcing his move. “My constituents know that being a Senator was never going to be my career.”
DeMint has often clashed with his members of his own party in Congress. South Carolina’s Republican governor, Nikki Haley, will appoint DeMint’s successor who will serve as the junior Senator from the Palmetto State until a special election is held in 2014.
