Jobless Claims Drop to Lowest Level Since 2000

Claims for unemployment aid dropped to their lowest level since June 2000, according to the Labor Department.

Weekly jobless aid claims fell to 264,000, while the less-fluctuating monthly average fell to 283,000, the lowest in over fourteen years. The numbers follow months of steady (but not robust) job growth, signaling that hiring is picking up even amidst concerns of global economic instability.

Per the Associated Press, analysts called the data “spectacular.”

“Whether claims can be sustained at such a low level – an all-time low, as a share of payroll employment – is debatable,” said one economist, “but this is a clear signal of real strength in the labor market.”
