Joe Biden is the Top Polling Democrat to Face Trump in 2020

Former Vice President Joe Biden swears he would have “beat the hell” out of President Donald Trump in high school — but could he knock him out of the White House in 2020?

The 75-year-old is currently the most popular choice to lead the Democratic ticket in the next presidential election, according to CNN’s analysis of national polls conducted throughout 2018. In fact, a University of New Hampshire survey suggests he’d wipe the slate of potential Democratic candidates clean — including Rep. Joseph Kennedy III (D-MA), Sen. Elizabeth Warren and even Oprah Winfrey, securing the opportunity to take on an incumbent Trump.

The only person who could throw a wrench into the scenario is Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT). The Independent Vermont senator — who isn’t registered as a Democrat, but, of course, ran in the Democratic primary in 2016 — trails Biden with 21 percent of support among potential Democratic candidates, while the former vice president leads with 27 percent.

Biden is already getting the presidential candidacy treatment from Trump, earning himself the nickname “Crazy Joe Biden” in a tweet the president sent Thursday. Trump called the former vice president “weak, both mentally and physically,” responding to statements Biden made during a recent speech in which he once-again said he would have physically hurt the president back in the day for his treatment of women.

“When a guy who ended up becoming our national leader said, ‘I can grab a woman anywhere and she likes it’ and then said, ‘I made a mistake,'” Biden said Tuesday. “They asked me would I like to debate this gentleman, and I said no. I said, ‘If we were in high school, I’d take him behind the gym and beat the hell out of him.'”

“He doesn’t know me, but he would go down fast and hard, crying all the way,” the president responded, while simultaneously telling the former vice president not to threaten people.

Yes, two men currently trading barbs about a potential schoolyard brawl could soon be challenging each other to lead the most powerful country in the world. Could there be anything more telling of the times we’re living in?
