John Avlon: Trump Only Does Interviews With Outlets That Give Him a ‘Partisan Reassuring Foot Massage’

Over the weekend, President Donald Trump >took to Twitter to claim that he rejected an interview and photo shoot with TIME Magazine because they told him that he’d only “probably” be the publication’s Person of the Year. Following that tweet, and TIME claiming the president was “incorrect,” CNN senior media correspondent Brian Stelter noted that Trump doesn’t want to speak to outlets that he feels aren’t friendly with him anymore.

During today’s broadcast of Reliable Sources, Stelter brought on a panel to discuss Trump’s recent attacks on CNN as well as his TIME tweet. Speaking to The Daily Beast editor-in-chief John Avlon, Stelter stated that he figures that TIME likely called Trump’s office for a possible interview but wouldn’t commit to making him the Person of the Year, leading to Trump getting “ticked off.”

Avlon responded that it would be totally normal for TIME to do this as they likely have a handful of people they are considering for the spot and they’re waiting and setting it up for a big reveal. However, the bigger takeaway here is Trump’s refusal to sit for an interview beforehand.

“The real motivation is not wanting to sit down for an interview with a news outlet that doesn’t simply offer partisan reinforcing foot massage,” he stated.

Later on, media critic David Zurawik said that Avlon was “absolutely right” and that the president would just prefer to go to his “Twitter pals” at Fox News like “Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham.”
