Josh Earnest Suggests Assault Weapons Ban After San Bernardino Massacre

josh earnestIn the aftermath of Wednesday’s massacre in San Bernardino, CA, the White House Press Secretary suggested implementing an assault weapons ban during a meeting in the Oval Office.

Syed Farook and his wife Tashfeen Malik, the two suspects in the deadly massacre that killed 14 and injured at least 21 in San Bernardino, CA, were “dressed and equipped” during Wednesday’s rampage. In addition to two assault riffles and two semi-automatic handguns, police also detailed 1,400 rounds of assault rifle ammunition in the couple’s car and home, as well as a dozen devices resembling pipe bombs. Farook and Malik shot 76 rounds during the gunfight with police that ultimately killed the two suspects. All four guns were purchased legally.

At a press briefing after the meeting, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters, “one thing we could do is we could ban the sale of assault weapons,” adding “that certainly would make it harder for those individuals who shouldn’t have them from getting them.”

Earnest suggested an assault weapons ban is a logical move for a country that experiences so much gun violence. “It would be an indication to some common sense thinking people that we should consider some different laws,” he said.
