Keith Ellison: White House ‘Can’t Deny That This Is a Muslim Ban’
Congressman Keith Ellison said on CBS’ Face the Nation this morning that President Trump‘s new executive order clearly is a Muslim ban, even if they insist it isn’t.
Many people have referred to this order as a Muslim ban (including Michael Flynn‘s son in a since-deleted tweet), and Rudy Giuliani said on Fox last night that after Trump announced his Muslim ban, he asked him to figure out “the right way to do it legally.”
The executive order places temporary bans on U.S. entry on refugees and seven predominantly-Muslim nations. Members of the administration today pointed to how dozens of other predominantly-Muslim nations are not on the list in pushing back against the idea that it’s a Muslim ban.
Ellison, himself one of two Muslim members of Congress, highlighted what Giuliani said and insisted, “We’ve never had a religious-based ban before. And they can’t deny that this is a Muslim ban––it is a Muslim ban.”
Dickerson pushed back by asking about all the Muslim nations not on the list. Ellison said based on what Reince Priebus said on Face the Nation before him, this isn’t the end of it.
He added that it’s “un-American” to say Syrian refugees facing atrocities are not welcome in the United States.
