Ken Buck On MTP: Being Gay Is A Choice, Similar To Alcoholism
Gay rights and DADT appears to be making a late run as the most talked-about issue in this year’s Midterms. Earlier today on Meet the Press Colorado Senate Republican candidate Ken Buck, who is a supporter of DADT, revealed that he thinks homosexuality is a choice. Sort of like alcoholism. From NBC’s First Read:
GREGORY: Do you believe that being gay is a choice?
BUCK: I do.
GREGORY: Based on what?
BUCK: Based on what? I guess you can choose who your partner is.
GREGORY: You don’t think it’s something that’s determined at birth?
BUCK: I think that birth has an influence over it, like alcoholism and some other things, but I think that basically, you have a choice.
Before your head totally explodes Buck went on to clarify
“That he thinks there is “some element of predisposition” in homosexuality. He noted that he mentioned alcoholism as an example of another behavior that can be influenced by genetic factors. “I wasn’t talking about being gay as a disease,” Buck said. “I don’t think that at all.”
What I find amazing about the DADT debate is that it is not a divisive issue where party politics are concerned — the majority of American’s support its repeal — but that it reveals an age divide. It’s hard to imagine any American politician under, say, the age 40 from either party declaring that homosexuality is a “choice.” Watch the segment below.
