Killer Mike: ‘Stupid’ to Link Violence to Rap, Talk About Violent Religions
Artist and activist Killer Mike told Bill Maher last night that it’s “stupid” to link violence to rap and hip-hop, especially when there are bigger and more violent institutions to contend with.
During the Overtime segment of Real Time, he provided a history lesson about the origins of hip-hop and how it was established in the late 60s/early 70s to “give poor kids the opportunity to organize as an alternative to violence.”
Killer Mike even pushed back against certain stereotypes about black artists, before saying if people want to talk about pushing back against violent culture, they should first “start with the three major Abrahamic religions and let’s do away with their books,” then worry about violence carried out by the state.

He told Maher directly, “People in hip-hop want to do the same thing as you do. Talk shit about politics, smoke weed, and date dope black women!”
