KY Clerk Ordered to Issue Gay Marriage Licenses Now Appealing to SCOTUS

PicMonkey Collage- Kim DavisWell, who saw this one coming? Rowan County clerk Kim Davis is now appealing to the Supreme Court justices who legalized same-sex marriage to protect her right not to issue same-sex marriage licenses.

Davis became a notorious opponent of gay marriage when she ordered her office to stop issuing marriage licenses in protest of Obergefell V. Hodges. Her office has been filmed rejecting gay couples three times by this point, and has faced a lawsuit after rejecting the ruling on the grounds of her religious freedom.

A federal judge has ruled that Davis’ job is legally required to issue licenses to any applicants, and two days ago, the 6th circuit denied her motion to stay the appeal and ordered her to end the freeze. Less than 24 hours later, Davis has remained defiant, and her lawyers have now petitioned SCOTUS, pleading for “asylum for her conscience” until the appeal is finished.

“If a (same-sex marriage) license is issued with Davis’ name, authorization and approval, no one can unring that bell,” Davis reportedly wrote the court. “That searing act of validation would forever echo in her conscience.”

Justice Elena Kagan will reportedly rule on Davis’ request, which does not bode well for Davis since she sided with the majority on Obergefell.
