Latino Students Angry Over Senior Prank That Involved Setting Up Wall in Hallway
In Asheville, North Carolina, some Latino students are upset over a recent senior prank that involved a cardboard wall being built overnight to block a hallway at McDowell High School. Students involved admitted they considered putting a logo for Donald Trump on one of the boxes used.
Once a picture of the students who built the wall grinning in front of it hit social media, the upset kids say, it started getting reposted with racist captions.
In an interview with ABC’s News 13, Brian Oliver with the McDowell County Schools said, “It’s really unfortunate when anyone uses social media in an immature way. Once you launch it, you have no control. Comments that are made after you post a photo can say anything they want, and you have no control over what that message becomes.”
He said that there will be no disciplinary action for the 30+ students who constructed the cardboard wall because the only offensive part of the prank was the racist captions online.
Meanwhile, the principal, Edwin Spivey has apologized to Latino students who raised concerns with him. He plans to work with them to “repair relationships.”
