Mad Men Creator and Others Sign Petition Supporting Iran Deal

PicMonkey Collage - Mad MenOn the surface, one might ask: what does Mad Men, a show about how relationships and social moods intertwine with business, have in common with Game of Thrones, a fantasy drama about mythical creatures and political strife? The answer is that both have high-ranking figures who are supporting the Iran nuclear deal as part of Los Angeles’s Jewish community.

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner and Game of Thrones executive producer Carolyn Strauss placed both their signatures on an open letter as part of the American Jewish Supporters of Israel’s appeal to Congress to approve the deal. Various other Hollywood heavyweights have lent their approval to the letter, saying it would be a “tragic mistake” for the government to reject a deal thats “in the best interest of the United States and Israel.”

“We appreciate that many have reasonable concerns about the risks of a complex nuclear weapons development agreement with an untrustworthy adversary like Iran,” the letter stated. “We too hold these concerns, but the deal that was reached is not founded on trust; it is grounded in rigorous inspections and monitoring.”

Matthew Velkes, COO of Village Roadshow, spoke to the Hollywood Reporter about the letter, saying “I just felt that some of the mainstream Jewish organizations weren’t speaking on behalf of a large segment of the community that has a different point of view.”

Velkes continued to explain the different opinions Jewish groups have about the deal, saying that LA’s Jewish population is “as diverse a community as one might imagine.”

Congress has until September 17 to vote on the deal’s approval.
