Matt Taibbi Takes Shot at David Gregory: How Can He ‘Call Himself a Journalist’?

Matt Taibbi sat down with HuffPost Live Thursday to talk about moving to Glenn Greenwald‘s new media venture and the state of American journalism. Alyona Minkovski asked Taibbi about how the rest of the media has covered Greenwald and the NSA leaks he reported on, most famously when David Gregory questioned whether Greenwald should be held liable for “aiding and abetting” Edward Snowden. For Taibbi, that was not a good day for journalism, saying of Gregory, “I don’t know how he can call himself a journalist and talk like that.”

He said journalists are “supposed to report the truth if whistleblowers come forward” and “take the risk,” so for journalists to be criticizing other journalists for simply doing their jobs, Taibbi called that “an enormous blow to the free press in this country.”

He added that if this had happened around the time of the journalists of decades past, “they would have never stood for this, they would have banded together as one and been up in arms about it.”
