Mediaite’s Noah Rothman Talks CPAC, Rand Paul And The Future Of The GOP With WGN Radio’s Carol Roth

Mediaite’s own Noah Rothman returned to The Noon Show with Carol Roth on Chicago’s WGN Radio Friday to discuss CPAC 2013 and what the conference means for the future of the Republican Party.

Rothman characterized the CPAC attendees of being “regularly pilloried on the left for being out-of-touch and exclusionary.” That has been especially true this year, he said, after the group behind CPAC decided to exclude gay conservative groups and more moderate Republicans like New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. “There is a real feeling on the right,” he said, “that they need to be more open and more inclusive and CPAC has done nothing for its image by inviting a lot of old party officials like Sarah Palin and controversial individuals like Donald Trump.”

Regarding the Republican Party’s recent political misfortunes, Rothman said he sees some hope in the form of the “dramatic internal debates” happening around both CPAC and Sen. Rand Paul‘s filibuster. Paul in particular demonstrated, according to Rothman, that there is “dynamism within the Party and it opened up a voice for a younger generation of more libertarian-leaning individuals.” Calling Paul’s filibuster “romantic, historic and novel,” Rothman said it “woke up a major segment of the voting populace” who could potentially support Republicans in the future.
