Megyn Kelly Cautions NBC Colleagues Over Letter Supporting Tom Brokaw: ‘You Don’t Know What You Don’t Know’
Monday on Megyn Kelly Today, host Megyn Kelly covered the sexual misconduct allegations against Tom Brokaw — and unlike many of her female NBC News colleagues, she did not sign the letter backing the former Nightly News anchor against the claims.
Along with NBC reporters Kate Snow and Stephanie Gosk, Kelly opened by summarizing the allegations against the NBC News anchor.
Brokaw has been accused of sexual misconduct by two women. One is unnamed, the other is Linda Vester — a former NBC News war correspondent and anchor. Vester told Variety that Brokaw tried to force her to kiss him on two different occasions. She also alleges that the former NBC Nightly News anchor once showed up at her hotel room uninvited, and groped her in an NBC conference room. Brokaw has denied the claims vigorously.
A number of former and current female colleagues of Brokaw signed their names to a letter of support for the longtime NBC News anchor. Among those who signed; Rachel Maddow, Mika Brzezinski, and Andrea Mitchell.
And towards the end of the discussion, Kelly addressed the letter:
“It’s basically a character reference,” Kelly said. “And they’re saying, ‘For what it’s worth, my experience with him has always be honorable, and he’s always treated me well.’ And I understand that. Because when you love the person being under attack, you want to say, ‘This has been my experience.'”
“I will say, that the same thing did happen at Fox. And the truth is, you don’t know what you don’t know. And that’s not in any way to impugn Tom, who I love. And who’s been so good to me. Just saying, you don’t know what you don’t know.”
“What happens behind closed doors — we saw it at Fox News — these women came out. And I remember sitting there thinking ‘you’re wrong, it happened to me, your statements are wrong, and you’re going to be proven wrong.'”
“I don’t feel that way here, I really don’t, I love Tom,” Kelly added. “But I think letters like that can be dicey. That’s all I’m going to say.”
This is a subject Kelly has tackled on numerous occasions during her Megyn Kelly Today reign. Most notably, the eponymous host has opened up about her own claims against the late Roger Ailes — former Fox News chief.
