Mississippi Newspaper Shames State Lawmakers for Silence on Confederate Flag

The Confederate flag debate is especially sensitive in the south, where its placement before the South Carolina state house and on the Mississippi flag attests to its stubborn prominence among the electorate. Hence, a good chunk of southern lawmakers want as far away from the argument over its removal as possible.

Tough, said the Clarion-Ledger, which ran a full front-page spread shaming legislators who have not weighed in on the issue. “While some politicians may hope that this issue will go away, we are committed to making them stand up and take a position,” the paper wrote Saturday. “It’s the least any voter should expect from the men and women elected to represent us.”

As of that cover, more than half had not answered the Clarion-Ledger’s question.
