As a result of the explosions, 12 U.S. service members were killed and 15 others were injured – the deadliest attack against the U.S. military for Afghanistan since Aug. 6, 2011 and the first casualties of U.S. troops since Feb. 8, 2020. In total, 90 people were killed, while 150 others were injured in the explosions. ISIS-K, the Islamic State branch in South and Central Asia, has claimed credit for the attack.
Verified Twitter users slammed Nance’s tweet.
#DealWithIt?????

This is an intelligence expert who cannot seem to realize why a bomb going off today outside of the Kabul airport or the mostly guarded by US military hotel is any different from past suicide bombers… https://t.co/ybDwTbG2cy

can’t think of anything witty to say here but maybe if your tweet about a suicide bombing includes “hashtag dealwithit” it’s not a good tweet https://t.co/01LZkFadSr

UPDATE 5:42 pm ET: Later on Thursday, Nance deleted the tweet and posted an apology thread.
HERE IS WHY I’m going to delete this tweet. Today we lost 12 brave Americans & many Afghans. I deeply regret how callous it now sounds. I would never intentionally disrespect my brothers & sisters in arms. I also sincerely apologize to their families, and I pray for them. 1/ https://t.co/4DbNKO2Z8C

As proud combat veteran whose family has served the U.S. military for 150 years, I spent almost all of my adult hood in defense of our country & its freedoms & guarded it w/my own life. Yes, I posted before there were any serious casualties reported. I should’ve waited. 2/

Over 70,000 Afghan civilians, 40,000 Afghan soldiers, and 2,743 Americans have died in this conflict. I am heartsick about the lives we have already lost and those we lost today. 3/

Finally: My first Intel job was in Beirut, 1983. We lost 322 Marines/Sailors & civilians in just 2 suicide attacks. I was at the Pentagon 9/11 & survived Suicide Bombers in Iraq. My work is to keep you informed w/accurate assessments. I’ll keep doing that …with more empathy. /4
