NBC News’s Tom Winter Blasts SNL Joke About Wounded Vet: ‘Ashamed It Was On NBC’s Air’
The backlash towards SNL’s Pete Davidson continues and appears to be transcending traditional political lines. Or more to the point, it’s no longer solely a conservative outrage story, at least evidenced by recent comments made by NBC News’ Tom Winter.
For the uninitiated, Davidson mocked the appearance of the Republican candidate in Texas 2nd district Dan Crenshaw who wears an eyepatch from having been wounded during his military service. Since then, there has been predictable, and not unreasonable, outrage about Davidson’s “joke.”
And now NBC is receiving friendly fire from one of their own. Winter, an investigative reporter from NBC News, tweeted:
No veteran should be mocked for their service. No veteran who lost an eye in an IED blast and then served two more tours should have that injury be a punchline.
This ‘joke’ was disgusting and as the grandson of two WWII veterans I’m ashamed it was on NBC’s air. https://t.co/lNhbppgAkA

Earlier in the day, Sean Spicer called for the firing of SNL’s Executive Producer Lorne Michaels.
For his part, Crenshaw has taken the high road, refusing to demand an apology though admitting that SNL should probably apologize. Instead, he’s used his instant fame to seek a $1 Million charitable donation to military veteran support groups from NBC. Seems reasonable!
