Neil DeGrasse Tyson: We’re Not Killing the Earth, We’re Killing Ourselves

In a video posted to Business Insider yesterday, astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson explains that climate change is more an issue about saving humans as opposed to saving the planet, because the planet will be here, rotating around the sun, years and years and years after humans go extinct.

He first went after science denialism, saying “the good things about science is it’s true, whether or not you believe in it.” Tyson found it odd that climate change has become a political issue when people aren’t taking sides over, say, the theory of relativity, along political lines.

And on climate change, Tyson explained, “Earth will survive this. People say ‘Save the earth.’ No, don’t worry about earth. Earth’ll be here long after we render ourselves extinct.”

Or, as George Carlin once eloquently put it, “The planet is fine. The people are f*cked!”
